Merakai Therapies are passionate about massage and other therapies to help balance your life.  We call it the "pie" approach - every piece of the pie works together to help you be the best you can be.  Exercise is an important "piece", and finding the right fitness specialists to help you is vital.  During pregnancy there are a number of changes that happen to your body, and you need to train with instructors who are experienced and knowledgeable in training your changing body.

We recently had the opportunity to interview Dahlas Fletcher, who is a pregnancy and postnatal trainer, and owner of BodyFabulous and Preggie Bellies Brisbane.  We are very pleased to introduce her and her businesses to Merakai Therapies family.  Continue reading below to find out more about Dahlas and her fabulous businesses.


Tell us a little about yourself.

Hello, I am Dahlas (pronounced Dallas) I am a certified Pregnancy & Post Natal trainer, a Mum to 3 young kids and happily married to my husband David for 13 years.

How long have you being working with pregnant and postnatal women in fitness?

I have been in the fitness industry for over 20 years. I have always has a passion for fitness, so while I was studying Media Communications at University I decided to also obtain my Group Fitness qualifications. Then while working full time in Media/Advertising my fitness career organically grew – which I guess is what happens when you love something ! I became a Les Mills Instructor, then Personal Trainer then after my first son was born I decided to specialise in Pre/Postnatal Fitness. There were not too many courses around for pregnancy specialisation 10 years ago, so I travelled to Melbourne and trained with the founding Physio’s of Preggi Bellies International. From there, I have instructed group classes for Preggi Bellies for 10 years, done Pre/Postnatal Personal Training for 6 years and I am now the proud owner of the Preggi Bellies Qld Franchise.

What training have you completed to become a pregnancy and postnatal exercise specialist?

I have completed Fitness Australia’s recognised courses :

  • Preggi Bellies Specialised Pregnancy/Postnatal Group Exercise Training 
  • Australian Fitness Network Certified Pregnancy & Post Natal Exercise
  • Australian Fitness Network Certified Exercising for Two

And this year I am really excited to complete the Burrell Education Course in Modern Functional Pregnancy Exercise Training. There are so many new and exciting progressions in pre/postnatal training so improving my knowledge is really important.

Tell us about Body Fabulous and Preggi Bellies Brisbane journey

Bodyfabulous is my Personal Training business and blog. I offer private sessions to many pre-postnatal women at home and at gyms. 

Preggi Bellies is Australia’s leading strength and fitness Group exercise program, designed specifically for pregnant and postnatal women. A high energy cardio and muscle conditioning workout using medical grade fitballs, that was developed by Physiotherapists and leading women’s health specialists. What do you love most about your job?

What I love is that it doesn’t really feel like a job ! I am incredibly passionate about helping women enjoy safe and appropriate exercise during and after pregnancy so they can feel physical and emotional best. I personally know how exercise during and after pregnancy helped me with my 3 births – so I love sharing this knowledge and experience with other women and seeing the results they achieve.


What would a client expect from a training session with Body Fabulous?

At Bodyfabulous I provide clients with a comprehensive Personal Training Program and Nutrition guidelines. My sessions are adapted to client’s varying stages of Pregnancy and Postnatal Recovery and I include Pelvic Floor Safe Cardio Training, Functional Strength Training and Pilates based moves.


What can women expect from a Preggi Bellies session?

Preggi Bellies has several venues on Brisbane’s Northside and Southside. All our trainers are fully Pre/Postnatal certified and all are Mums – some are also twin mums who have done the sessions during their own pregnancies ! We offer a total body workout including controlled cardio exercise on medical grade fitballs that is pelvic floor safe, together with resistance training, and pregnancy specific core stabilization that focuses primarily on the pelvic floor. Our classes contain no more than 12 women so we can provide appropriate modifications for the varying stages of pregnancy / post natal period.

When is a good time in pregnancy to start training?

The best time to start is prior to pregnancy if you can ! Otherwise, probably around the 9-12 weeks pregnant when nausea starts to decrease and energy levels increase. 

How long after birth can a woman start PT with you?

After your 6-8 week medical clearance post birth. During these early post natal stages it is important to focus on healing from the inside out, then progressing to appropriate exercises and as your strength and energy improves. There is nothing worse for your body than jumping straight into a punishing exercise routine – this will only damage your pelvic floor and core and delay your recovery process. 

Do you have any daily or weekly ‘must-do’s’ that help you stay fit and fabulous for your clients?

I don’t really have “must-do’s” as I think as busy women and mother’s we have enough pressure on us. All I try to do is include 3 times a week some form of exercise that I enjoy. I also try to focus on eating healthy, natural wholesome foods to give me energy ! 

What do you love most about being a mum?

So many things ! Those precious newborn moments, those hilarious toddler moments and then watching your children grown into amazing little people as they get older. Every day is different, my children bring so much joy, laughter and positive energy. I try to focus on this when being a working Mum becomes challenging.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I love Yoga for the mental and physical release it gives me. Also escaping to the beach for long walks or a run and spending quality time with my family.

3 tips or words of advice for new pregnant mums.

Trust your instincts. If it doesn’t feel right – don’t do it ! This applies to exercise and all facets of pregnancy and motherhood. Your motherly instinct is powerful so do what feels right for you and your baby, rather than consuming too much advice elsewhere, otherwise it just becomes extremely overwhelming.
